Build a Tower, Build a Team
Through the Marshmallow Challenge, Tom Wujec has learned a lot about how people work together. Some teams have problems because they jockey for power. In other words, team members spend to much time deciding who is in charge. Some teams sketch a lot of different ideas, but then run out of time and do not finish their towers. Other teams assemble a tower that looks good - just before it collapses under the marshmallow's weight.
Read the above paragraph and write your response to the following questions.
1. What do people do when they are jockeying for power?
2. Why did some teams not finish their towers?
3. What happens to some towers when you put the marshmallow on top?

So, normally, most people begin by __________________ task. They _______________________, they figure out what it's going to look like; they jockey for power. Then they spend some time _____________________________, they sketch and they lay out spaghetti. They spend the majority of their time ___________________ the sticks into ever-growing structures. And then finally, just as they're running out of time, someone takes out the marshmallow, and then they ______________________ it on top, and then they stand back, and -- ta-da! -- they admire their work. But what really happens, most of the time, is that the "ta-da" turns into an "uh-oh," because the weight of the marshmallow causes the entire __________________________ to buckle and to collapse.
