CONSERVING THE CANOPY
Nalini Nadkarni Forest Ecologist
As a child, Nalini Nadkarni grew up climbing trees for fun. Today, as a forest ecologist, she communicates he passion for trees to non-scientists with the help of poets, musicians and artists.
One such non-scientist is dance director Jodi Lomask. After spending some time tin the Costa Rican rain forest with Nadkarni, Lomask felt inspired. With her dance troupe Capacitor, she created an amazing dance called Biome.
After this successful collaboration, Nadkarni set up the 'Sound Science Project' together with rap artist 'C.A.U.T.I.O.N.' she brought middle school students from the inner city to experience the rain forest canopy for themselves. Then they composed their own rap songs, which they recorded in a studio afterwards.
Nadkarni wants everyone to know how beautiful and necessary the forest canopy is. Through these projects, she has been able to get others to see this, too. The results have been fantastic.
